The 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook Southeast Asia on March 28.
LONDON – The human toll from last month’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand continues to rise, with Myanmar’s death count now updated to 3,354 as of Saturday, according to state-run media.
The state broadcaster, reported that an additional 4,850 people have been injured, and 220 individuals are still unaccounted for.
In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok – also impacted by the quake on March 28—at least 23 deaths have been confirmed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
Most of these fatalities -15 in total- occurred at the site of a high-rise building that was under construction and collapsed during the powerful tremor. City officials have indicated that many more people are still missing.
Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing in both countries.
Myanmar has received help from several nations, including China and Russia, who have sent emergency response teams and rescue workers in the wake of the devastating earthquake.
According to The Associated Press, American rescue teams haven’t been sent out, as President Donald Trump’s administration is working on dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
