“We completely support your right to determine your own future,” Trump tells the people of Greenland—before promising to “make efforts to acquire” the territory.

President Donald Trump stated in a speech late Tuesday that the United States aims to secure Greenland “one way or another,” while also highlighting the island’s right to self-governance.

In his address to Congress regarding his policy goals, Trump reiterated that acquiring the Danish-controlled territory is vital for U.S. interests.
Speaking directly to the people of Greenland, Trump said, “We fully support your right to shape your own future. And if you choose to, we would be happy to welcome you as part of the United States.”

However, he also mentioned, “Greenland is crucial for both national and global security. We are in discussions with all relevant parties to make this a reality … And I believe we will secure it one way or another. We will make it happen.”

A significant majority of Greenland’s population—around 85 percent—opposes joining the United States, according to a January poll.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed Trump’s proposal as “nonsensical,” while Greenland’s pro-independence leader, Múte Egede, emphasized that his people “have no desire to become Americans.”

Trump’s remarks faced criticism from Danish MEP Anders Vistisen of the nationalist Danish People’s Party.
“Trump’s comments confirm that the U.S. views Greenland as a strategic asset rather than acknowledging its people’s legitimate right to self-determination,” Vistisen told POLITICO.
“If he truly wants strong ties with Greenland, he should respect both Greenlandic and Danish sovereignty instead of trying to pressure his way into influence,” he added.
Previously, Trump had not dismissed the possibility of using economic pressure or military intervention to gain control of Greenland, raising concerns in Copenhagen and Nuuk.
While he did not reiterate those threats on Tuesday, he stressed Greenland’s strategic importance, describing it as “a vast land with a small population but critical military significance.”

Greenland, home to around 60,000 residents, is the largest island in the world and features a U.S. airbase along with a military presence in its remote northern area.
“We will ensure your security. We will bring you prosperity,” Trump promised the people of Greenland. “Together, we will elevate Greenland to heights beyond your wildest dreams.”
